WHY DELTA?

I’m super excited… Yes, I know that seems to be my phrase. But I’m headed to Las Vegas, Nevada. Why you may ask… For the 53rd National Convention of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Yes.. I’m a proud member of DST for 32 plus years.

I know you may read and hear a lot about black greek organizations and I’m not trying to respond to every comment or debate anyone’s position. But I want to lift my voice to say I’m proud to be a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

I was initiated in the Fall of 1984 at Alpha Theta Chapter at Lincoln University, Jefferson City, Missouri. I have been active since the beginning.

I wanted to share 3 Reasons why DELTA works for me. Don’t get me wrong, any organization that’s run by people isn’t perfect. But neither am I so.. Delta works for me.

One… THE SISTERHOOD…

There is nothing like being connected with a group of strong women focused to achieve and impact. The bond is real and I have called on it many times. Probably my first memory was my internship in college when I went on an interview right after getting a tooth extracted. There were a group of students from different schools interviewing with IBM. I didn’t know anyone. I was feeling terrible. Once several people found out that I was a Delta.. WOW… the love and support was instant. My sorors took care of me. The memory still warms my heart to this day.

No matter where I’ve lived and whatever church I’ve attended, I’ve always been able to find sorors to love on me. I have so many Delta Moms… That I’ve lost count.

At this stage in life, it’s hard to develop close bonds because of people’s crazy schedules and family life. However, I found my best friend by her simply sitting down next to me in a Delta training. She is truly a sister, beyond Delta.

Second Reason… SCHOLARSHIP…

No, I didn’t receive a scholarship from a Delta chapter. Actually, I didn’t know anything about Delta when I was in high school.

The scholarship I’m talking is about is the learning at a higher level. Delta has provided a rich field of opportunity for me to grow and develop both personally and professionally. My interest in developing the first chapter site blossomed into my own business for graphic design and website development.

Delta has given me so many leadership opportunities to grow and be mentored by some phenomenal women. I just can’t say enough.

The strongest Reason… SERVICE…

Yes, you can do public service through many different organizations. However.. Being part of an organization that impacts both locally, regionally and nationally is powerful. To know there are so many women with a heart to help and support the community is amazing.

In January of this year, I chaired my chapter’s largest annual public service event, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. It included over 1400 people from the public to work on 25 service project. The event was a huge success. Not only for the recipients but for the people who served. Organizing an event of that size wasn’t easy but the impact was huge. I LOVE IT. I can’t wait for 2018. We are looking for it to be bigger.

I know you may read and hear a lot about black greek organizations and I’m not trying to respond to every comment or debate anyone’s position. But I wanted to lift my voice to say I’m proud to be a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

I had to come back and added a key point. Under service is SOCIAL ACTION. Delta Sigma Theta started by 22 women passionate about social action and Delta continues to be in the forefront. I’m amazed at all the platforms my sorors are involved in and choose to lift their voices. Yesterday I was speaking to my soror, Leslie Lorfill, she just delivered her 11th child.. yes 11. But she was talking about her social action platform for homeless veteran women. She is doing all she can to raise awareness and support for this issue. I encourage you to support her efforts.
